Red Flag is an annual large scale training exercise using ranges near Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. In August 1977, the RAF deployed 10 Buccaneer S.2B’s there from 208 Sqn, who totally astounded the Americans with their low flying agility. On succeeding exercises the Buccaneers flew at 50-100 feet. The Americans could see them, only when the dust was blown up from the desert floor by the jet efflux! An all-over camouflage scheme was needed for serious low level work, so the Buccaneers were painted in an overall two-tone desert camouflage, leaving the rear fuselage in the original grey/green paint around the jet exhaust.

Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2B

Designed by Blackburn (prior to their acquisition by Hawker Siddley) to meet a Royal Navy requirement for a carrierborne high-speed low-level strike plane, the Buccaneer was first flown on April 30th, 1958. The design incorporated many advanced features such as a tailcone which would split vertically to deploy a airbrakes and a rotory bomb door for deliverying conventional and nuclear weapons without incurring the drag penalty of opening into a high-speed slipstream.

Corgi’s 1:72 scale Buccaneer has small wings with vortex generators molded to the top surface behind the simulated stainless steel leading edge. The most notable unique feature of this model is the massive, articulated, spring-loaded air brake at the rear, which is easy to display in the deployed position and snaps shut with almost no gap. The hinged tail hook below rotates and can also be displayed in the deployed position. The robust metal landing gear is keyed and is easy to install for ground display and provides true tracking of the gear.
