Together with the Vickers Valiant, the Avro Vulcan and the Handley Page Victor were known as the 'V' bomber force and were Britain's nuclear deterrent during the height of the Cold War years of the 1960s. Painted in an anti-flash overall white finish to protect them from the effects of a nuclear explosion, these bombers rotated on a four-minute alert to 'scramble' if required, armed with a Blue Steel nuclear missile housed underneath the fuselage. Representing the Avro Vulcan B.2 force is XL443 of No. 83 Squadron, whose insignia is a deer's antler and was based at Scampton, Lines, in 1963 XL443 continued in service with the Scampton Wing until being withdrawn from use in January 1982 and scrapped in April The Victor B.2 is represented by XL231 of No.139 Squadron, based at Wittering, Cambridgeshire, in 1962. On 1st February 1962, the Victor Intensive Trials Unit became No. 139 Squadron at Wittering and formed part of the V-bomber force until it disbanded on 31st December 1968. XL231 was stored until becoming the first Victor to be converted from a bomber to a tanker by Hawker Siddeley in 1972. It served with all the Marham tanker squadrons until being retired to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington in November 1993, where it can be seen today.

Avro Vulcan B.Mk 2

Designed to meet an Air Ministry specification for a high-speed, high-altitude, long-range nuclear bomber, the Avro Vulcan was first flown on August 30, 1952. Though revolutionary, the Vulcan's original delta wing tailless design was an unknown quantity. The first prototype crashed in the fall of 1949 and the early straight leading edge design was later modified to kink towards the wingtip, giving the service aircraft superior flying characteristics. Carrying Britain's first nuclear weapon (the Blue Danube), the Vulcan's original role was nuclear deterrence, but it was later modified for air-to-air refueling missions and maritime radar reconnaissance.
