In 1939, Canadians volunteered in the thousands to support Great Britain at war. At midnight on D-Day, June 6th 1944, June 6, 1944, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion landed north of Caen, to protect the east flank of the landing area. Subsequently, Canadian paratroopers were involved in every main battle to secure France, the Low Countries and the Rhine crossing. The paratrooper here has just landed north of Caen, and is seen kneeling with his Steen gun ready to secure the drop zone, then collect the equipment.
