Corgi Aviation Archive Legends Series US35807
North American F-86A Sabre Diecast Model
USAF 336th FIS, 4th FIW, "Paul's MiG Killer", Joseph Fields, Kimpo, South Korea, 1952

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
North American F-86A Sabre   6.75"   6.25"

Joe Fields' F-86 wore perhaps the largest shark's mouth seen on a Sabre during the Korean War. Sharks' mouths had been popular on F-80s and F-51s early in the war, but were removed in deference to local sensibilities, with a fear that pilots of aircraft which crash-landed wearing such devilish markings might receive an unfriendly reception. This aircraft survived the war and later served with the 123rd FIS, based at Portland International Airport, Oregon.

North American F-86A Sabre

Designed to meet a USAAF requirement for a day-fighter/escort fighter/dive-bomber, the F-86 was first flown on October 1st, 1947. The Sabre's swept-wing “flying tail" configuration and hydraulic flight-control system were two of the many technological firsts in the Sabre's design that have now become standard for jet-powered aircraft. Armed with a “six-pack" of 50 caliber machine guns, the F-86 saw extensive action in the Korean War, where it often faced the cannon-armed MiG-15. In order to make a kill, the Sabre's pilot needed to have visual contact with the enemy—it was the last US Air Force aircraft with this quality, making it the last true dogfighter.

Corgi's 1:72 scale F-86 Sabrejet series salutes this classic Cold War era jet. The large canopy slides open to reveal the detailed cockpit interior and pilot figure. The nose of the model is correctly rendered with machine gun ports surrounded by simulated heat shielding, and there are detailed turbofan blades inside the engine's intake. The model features an easily configurable speed brake at the rear that, when configured in the deployed position, locks in place revealing details inside the airframe and actuator arm. Each release includes fixed fuel tanks mounted to the model's solid metal swept wings.
