The F-14A Tomcat is certainly one of the most well known strike fighters of the US Navy. Equipped with highly advanced twin engines and variable sweep wings, the F-14A can fly at Mach 2.0. Armed with a variety of air-to-air missiles, laser guided bombs and special targeting systems, this aircraft becomes one of the deadliest strikers in the air. VX-4 (Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 4) was established in 1950 in New England as Air Development Squadron 4, primarily for the development of airborne early warning system (AWACS). The squadron moved to NAS Patuxent River in 1951 where it was disestablished later the same year due to the lapse of assigned projects. VX-4 was reestablished in 1952 at NAS Point Mugu to conduct evaluations of air-launched guided missiles as assigned by the Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force. In 1960 the squadron began to include additional projects that were not associated with guided missiles. Projects such as the operational test and terrain clearance radar, Doppler navigation systems, and air-to-air distance measuring equipment were included in the squadron's tasks. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter and was first flown on December 21st, 1970. The aircraft features a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for enhanced maneuverability in air to air dogfights. In service from 1974 to 2006, the F-14 scored its first kill in 1981 over the Gulf of Sidra downing two Libyan aircraft. Over the course of its lifespan, the Tomcat saw several enhancements. Carrying the Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS), it replaced the RF-8G Crusader. Earning the nickname 'Bombcat', it also took over from the A-6 Intruder in the air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.© Copyright 2003-2009 The Flying Mule, Inc.
