Dragon Models 1:72 Warbirds 50284
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet Diecast Model
USN VFA-41 Black Aces, NH101, USS Nimitz, 2003, w/3 Figures

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet   10"   7.5"

Dragon Warbirds has been catapulted into the limelight with the arrival of its new aircraft diorama sets. The second such item to be launched is an F/A-18F Super Hornet. It arrives in a dramatic and attractive diorama scene featuring an authentic looking card base and three figures from a carrier deck crew. All items in this instant diorama scene are in an exact 1/72 scale. The figures are pre-painted and are in dramatic poses as they prepare to launch the Super Hornet from the carrier deck on its next mission. The F/A-18F, the two-seater version of the U.S. Navy's fighter attack aircraft, is from VFA-41 "Black Aces". VFA-41 is a strike fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California, whose motto is "First to Fight, First to Strike". The 1/72 scale aircraft is accurately proportioned, and it includes extremely fine details. The structure is perfectly set off by the beautiful marking scheme borne by this Super Hornet. This diorama scene is dramatic and appealing, and is ready to adorn a desk or shelf of some discerning collector!

US Navy Fighter Squadron 41 (VF-41) Black Aces was commissioned on June 1st, 1945 flying the F4U Corsair. The squadron transitioned through the F2H Banshee, F3H Demon and F-4 Phantom II before upgrading to the F-14 Tomcat in 1976. The Black Aces deployed several times on the USS Nimitz, often sharing the deck with F-14s from VF-84 Jolly Rogers. It was during one of these cruises, on August 19th, 1981, that Black Aces Tomcats shot-down two Libyan Su-22 Fitters over the Gulf of Sidra. This was the first ever combat incident involving US Tomcats. The squadron's final cruise with the F-14 took place in 2001 aboard the USS Enterprise. Upon return, VF-41 transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet

Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber.

Dragon's 1:72 scale F/A-18 is a crisp and finely detailed model that features nearly solid diecast metal construction. The solid metal wings and twin fins are sharply cast with fine panel line details generally seen in plastic models. The hinged canopy opens for a clear view of the cockpit interior details such as pad-printed front and side instrument panels. Other features include positionable horizontal stabilators, weathered engine exhaust nozzles and a delicate tail hook below. Each release features removable fuel tanks/ordnance. The series includes the single-seat F/A-18C and the two-seat F/A-18D Hornet with deployable speed brake and the more modern single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet.
