Dragon Models 1:72 Warbirds 50302
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet Diecast Model
USN VFA-2 Bounty Hunters, NE100, USS Abraham Lincoln, 2004, w/Carrier Deck Display Base

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet   10"   7.5"

VFA-2, nicknamed the "Bounty Hunters", is a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California. On July 1 2003, it was re-designated from VF-2 to reflect its transition from the F-14D Tomcat to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The Bounty Hunters took delivery of their first Super Hornet on October 6 2003, and within 4˝ months (the quickest time ever for a Super Hornet transition) the process was complete. The F/A-18F is the two-seat version of the Super Hornet, and its twin General Electric F414-GE-400 turbofan engines propel it to a maximum speed of Mach 1.6 or 1680km/h. VFA-2 forms part of Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2), most recently embarked on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Dragon Warbirds has released onto the market a 1/72 scale replica of an F/A-18F from VFA-2. It represents the aircraft belonging to the CAG (Commander, Air Group), who is the senior commander of the air wing. The F/A-18F has appeared in the Dragon Warbirds range before, so collectors will be familiar with the excellent level of detail and high-quality molding technology. However, this latest model is made special, not just by the fact that it portrays a fighter from VFA-2, but because of the scenic base representing an aircraft carrier deck, perhaps the USS Abraham Lincoln. It's an instant diorama straight from the box, complete with the carrier's jet-blast deflector shield already raised into position, a vehicle, and a lifelike deck crewman overseeing operations. This collection of well-painted and well-constructed items combines to create a spectacular centerpiece that would benefit any collection. Warbirds is proud to "launch" this F/A-18F Super Hornet on a carrier deck…in more way than one!

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet

Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber.

Dragon's 1:72 scale F/A-18 is a crisp and finely detailed model that features nearly solid diecast metal construction. The solid metal wings and twin fins are sharply cast with fine panel line details generally seen in plastic models. The hinged canopy opens for a clear view of the cockpit interior details such as pad-printed front and side instrument panels. Other features include positionable horizontal stabilators, weathered engine exhaust nozzles and a delicate tail hook below. Each release features removable fuel tanks/ordnance. The series includes the single-seat F/A-18C and the two-seat F/A-18D Hornet with deployable speed brake and the more modern single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet.
