Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60139
Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen Display Model
German Army PzGrenDiv, Kursk, USSR, 1943

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen   3.25"   1.25"

This 251 includes a fully detailed interior, weathering and represents an actual half-track that fought in 1943. The Großdeutschland Division (lit. Greater Germany Division) was an élite German Heer combat unit which saw action during World War II. Großdeutschland is sometimes mistakenly perceived as being a part of the Waffen-SS, whereas it was actually a Heer unit. It was, along with the Panzer Lehr Division, the best equipped unit in the Wehrmacht, receiving equipment before all other units (including Waffen-SS units). The GD Division served exclusively on the Eastern Front. It was annihilated near Pillau in May 1945. The German armed forces revolutionized warfare with its stunning blitzkrieg tactics. Instrumental in this new kind of war were the panzers and the panzergrenadiers in their mobile, armored vehicles. One of the mainstays of the panzergrenadiers was the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track with its top speed of 53km/h, a vehicle that was built in numerous configurations.

Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Schutzenpanzerwagen

Designed to meet a need for a vehicle that could safely transport infantry to the battlefield, the Sd.Kfz. 251 served Germany from 1939 to 1945. This half-track had a large track area and characteristic "slack track" design, with overlapping/interleaved main road wheels. It had an open top, which left the crew vulnerable to high explosive rounds and aircraft attack, but for practical purposes the design was so successful that it was produced in four models with no fewer than 23 variants. The "Hanomag" proved to be one of the most reliable half-tracks of the war and a total of 15,252 were built.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Sd.Kfz.251/7 Half-Track series includes the "C" and the final production "D" variants. The vehicle's open crew compartment provides a clear view of a fully rendered fighting compartment. The driver's controls and instrumentation are wonderfully detailed, with simulated wood plank benches stocked with rifles behind in the rear compartment. Each release captures the variety of forward mounted weapons, and some feature twin bridge sections atop the hull. The rear machine gun is mounted to a rotating anti-aircraft mount. The highly detailed front wheel steering linkages and track systems are mounted to a detailed diecast metal chassis to give the model a pleasing weight and robustness.
