Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60187
Krupp Sd.Kfz.161 Panzer IV G Display Model
German Army 3./PzRgt Totenkopf, #332, Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Krupp Sd.Kfz.161 Panzer IV G   3.25"   1.5"

The Third Battle of Kharkov, as historians refer to it, occurred in February-March 1943. A German counterattack succeeded in recapturing the city of Kharkov, and also led to the destruction of around 50 Soviet divisions. Dragon Armor's newest item depicts an armored vehicle that fought in this campaign – a Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G. The G version of the famous Panzer IV featured upgraded armor on the front and sides and it received a long-barreled 7.5cm KwK40 gun. This is a standout model since it marks Dragon Armor's first ever foray into Panzer IVs in 1/72 scale. As such it's a brand new tooling and boasts the finest possible details in this smaller scale. It capitalizes on prior research conducted for Dragon's 1:35 scale Panzer IV F/G, widely regarded by many as being the best ever Panzer IV kits.

The Dragon Armor item represents a tank of 3./Pz.Rgt Totenkopf of Pz.Gren.Div. Totenkopf. Thus, it's painted in a plain panzer gray color as commonly found in this battle. Being Dragon Armor's first 1:72 Panzer IV, it's a novel and welcome release, and it's furnished with realistic-looking insignia and finished with well-crafted weathering.

Krupp Sd.Kfz.161 Panzer IV G

Over 6,000 examples of Panzerkampfwagen IV tanks were produced between 1943 and 1945. Armed with a short-barrel 75mm gun and driven by a 250-horsepower engine, the Panzer IV quickly became the workhorse of Panzer Divisions. After the appearance of the Russian T-34-with its dominant guns and heavier, sloped armor-the Panzer needed design modifications such as thick side and turret skirts, a new gun (the KwK 40 75mm L/48) and a larger turret. With these upgrades, the Panzer IV proved equal to the Soviet T-34 and was also effective against British tanks and American M-4 Sherman Medium Tanks.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Panzer IV is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which allows for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, the model's hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and turret are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle's track system. The model's underside features riveted armor plating and leaf-spring suspension. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.
