Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60387
M4 Sherman Firefly Display Model
Polish Army 2nd Warsaw Armored Div, Rycerz I, Italy, 1945, Diorama

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
M4 Sherman Firefly   3.25"   1.5"

The Sherman tank saw widespread Allied use in WWII, but its original 75mm gun was inadequate for taking on heavily armored German tanks like the Panther and Tiger. With remarkable foresight the British decided to fit a 17pdr antitank gun, able to penetrate a Tiger I's frontal armor at 1000m, to the Sherman. Thus the Firefly was born, with approximately 2200 eventually produced. Most Fireflies were adapted from the M4A4 and were known as the Firefly VC ("C" denoting the 17pdr gun), while a smaller number were converted from the older M4 and were called Firefly IC.

Based on the Sherman I (M4), it has a cast one-piece differential housing and a characteristic turret stowage box – this housed the radio equipment that was displaced by fitting the larger gun. The turret and lower hull are brand new castings that capture the characteristic look of this Sherman variant. Painted in a standard green camouflage scheme, the tank is finished in the markings of a Polish Firefly from the 2nd Squadron, 1st Krechowiecki Lancers, 2nd Armoured Brigade, of the 2nd "Warsaw" Armored Division. This particular tank christened "Rycerz I" served in Italy in 1945. This new scale model, the first Firefly IC of its kind in the Dragon Armor range, is more than ready to take on its German counterparts in a duel!

M4 Sherman Firefly

The pilot model of the M4 was completed in September 1941, and the Sherman became the most widely produced tank of the war. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. Shermans also achieved success with progressively upgunned models and by working with tank destroyers. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role. It served with the US Army and Marines during World War II, and the US transferred large numbers to the United Kingdom and allied forces of many countries.

Dragon's 1:72 scale M4 Sherman is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which provides for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, this model has hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and a turret that are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle's track system. The model's underside features forward crew escape hatch, engine compartment access panels and wheel suspension components. Additional detailing includes delicate guards that shield both head lamps and textured lenses and tail lights. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.
