Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60631
Krupp 88mm FlaK Gun Display Model
German Army 10.PzDiv, Tunisia, 1943

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Krupp 88mm FlaK Gun   3.5"   2.75"

Originally an antiaircraft weapon, the “88” was one of the most famous weapons of WWII. One variant was the Flugzeugabwehrkanone (Flak) 36, which was in its element when serving as an anti-tank cannon. It had a two-piece barrel for easier replacement, and a heavier Sd.Anh.202 carriage that meant it could fire without being emplaced if necessary. The 7.4-tonne gun could be readied for action in just 2.5 minutes. Muzzle velocity was 820m/ and it was particularly deadly against enemy tanks, especially in the type of long-range encounters that occurred in North Africa. Dragon Armor’s newest depiction of the Flak 36 shows a weapon in service with the 10th Panzer Division in Tunisia, 1943. This division had been rushed to North Africa in late 1942 after the Allied landings under Operation Torch. The division had some successes against ‘green’ US Army units, including the Battle of Kasserine Pass in 1943. The gun on its cruciform platform is painted in a typical sand and green camouflage scheme. Of interest is the barrel that’s still painted in a panzer gray color. This was a legendary weapon of WWII, and Dragon’s model is accomplished in both its level of detail and desert finish.

Krupp 88mm FlaK Gun

The 88 mm gun was developed as early as 1928 by Krupp of Essen, and entered production after Hitler's rise to power in 1933. The '88' proved itself to be an excellent anti-aircraft gun and a feared tank killer relying on power and range rather than concealment. It could knock out any Allied tank at distances well over 1000 meters. The series of anti-aircraft guns officially called the 8,8 was mounted on a pivoted cruciform carriage, which was carried by two single axle trailers, pulled by another vehicle and could be quickly dismounted and stationed in the field or fired while trailered.
