This WWII fighter was a very successful aircraft for the US Marine Corps. It provided great diving capabilities, and a superior level of flying for its pilots. The F-4U had a long production life span, and in 1952 the last F-4U was built, bringing the total to 7,800 planes With a Pratt & Whitney 2,000 -hp engine, the plane flew at a max speed of 417 mph. It carried either six 50 caliber machine guns or four 20-mm cannons, plus a pair of 2000-lb bombs and six rockets. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for a single-seat carrier based fighter, the F4U was first flown on May 29th, 1940. This versatile aircraft saw service with both the Navy and Marine Corps in WW II and in the Korean War. During its lifetime, the Corsair underwent numerous improvements such as a lengthened fuselage, a high visibility bubble-top canopy and folding inverted gull wings that provided clearance for a large propeller.
