Volkel AB hosted the Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 demo team 2009. The team consisted mainly of 313 Squadron members with one coach from 311 Squadron. Aircraft #J-015 was painted as "The Orange Lion" for the season and the display pilot was Captain Ralph "Sheik" Aarts. Although it looks spectacular, the show of the demo team contains maneuvers which can occur during normal operational missions with the F-16. What makes the show special is that all of these maneuvers are smoothly linked together and are performed at very low altitude. During these maneuvers the body of the demo pilot is exposed to enormous positive and negative G forces. The Dutch demo pilot gives an impression of the maneuverability of the F-16 in general and also the skills which every Royal Netherlands Air force F-16 pilot has mastered.
Designed by General Dynamics to function as a lightweight USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This highly aerodynamic single-engine aircraft is one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War. It has a mid-monoplane wing design, with the centerline of the fuselage dominated by a broad-mouth intake opening. It can carry a multitude of different weaponry, from runway-denial munitions and air-to-air missiles to anti-armor and anti-radar homing missiles, drop bombs and Maverick air-to-ground missiles. Under its large, clear-vision canopy the pilot is assisted by an array of digital systems including fly-by-wire controls. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Gemini's 1:72 scale F-16 is constructed of solid diecast metal. Very few plastic parts are used, yet the finer points—detailed landing gear, engine exhaust, cockpit interior and panel lines and rivet details—are reminiscent of those usually only found on plastic models. Even subtle details have been included, such as radar warning antenna "beer cans," static discharge wicks and angle of attack vanes. This model is highly configurable, with movable stabilators, positionable rudder, a hinged canopy with extending and retracting actuator and a variety of different weapons configurations.
