Herpa Wings 552806
McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II Diecast Model
Luftwaffe JG 71 Richthofen, Wittmund, Germany, Squadron 50th Anniversary 2009

1:200 Scale   Length   Width
McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II   3.75"   2.25"

The “Richthofen” fighter squadron was established in 1959 at Ahlhorn near Bremen, and put under NATO control. After 1974, and meanwhile transferred to Wittmund near Wilhelmshaven, the squadron was equipped with the F-4F “Phantom II” interceptor. For the squadron’s 50th anniversary, the F-4F “Phantom II” with the registration 3703 will receive an impressive special livery. On the underside the silhouettes of the F-86 Sabre and the F-104 Starfighter are depicted – the F-4 “Phantom’s” two predecessor airplane types at the squadron. On the tail unit, a picture of Baron Manfred von Richthofen and his red DR-1 triplane from World War I is displayed. The anniversary airplane will be released simultaneously in the 1/200 scale by Herpa Wings. Design by Louis Du Chateau.

McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II

Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996.
