This was a specialty scheme painted on a single Air Force Reserve aircraft from the 45th FS / 930th OG located at Grissom AFB in Indiana. The stripes commemorated the 50th anniversary of the "D-Day" invasions of Normandy in World War II. USAF 930th OG, 45th TFS Hoosier Hogs, Grissom AFB, IN, D-Day 50th Anniversary May 1994. After being de-activated for a while the 45th TFS was activated again on October 1, 1973. Assigned to the 434th TFW at Grissom AFB, Indiana they flew the A-37 Dragonfly trainer for the next 8 years. In 1981 the squadron took a huge leap forward when they started to fly the A-10 Thunderbolt II. In 1987 while still at Grissom they were once again re-assigned this time to the 930th TFG that in turn became the 930th Operations Group a USAF Reserve unit. Still flying the A-10 the squadron was once more re-designated to the 45th Fighter Squadron, known as “Hoosier Hogs”. For 7 years the squadron continued to fly but 4 months after the D-Day Anniversary flight the squadron was inactivated on October 1, 1994.

Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II

Designed as a counter-insurgency aircraft for the Vietnam conflict, the A-10 was first flown in 1972. Nicknamed "Warthog," the A-10 was the first Air Force aircraft designed for close air support of ground forces. With 30mm Gatling guns that can fire 3,900 rounds a minute, the Warthog can defeat an array of ground targets, including armored vehicles. It can loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time, maneuver at low air speeds and operate under 1,000-foot ceilings. The Warthog’s low wing and tail and turbo-fan engines—each with a static thrust rating of 9000 pounds—make it suitable for deployment at advanced bases.
