In June 1941 Minsk fell to the invading German Army and after short period of military administration a civilian occupation regime was put in place. At the head of the regime was a Nazi sympathizer but in reality the control belonged to a Nazi official. The main objective was to rid the captured territory of non-Germanic people and make room for ethnic Germans. Minsk was recaptured by Soviet troops on July 3, 1944 but not before the city infrastructure, homes and roads were turned to rubble. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche as a low-cost and light-weight utility vehicle, the Kubelwagen prototype was completed in 1938 and entered full scale production in February 1940. The chassis design was initially derived from the highly successful Beetle while the bodywork was kept deliberately light-weight and functional. In fact, the name "Kubelwagen" literally translates to "Bucket Seat Car". Unlike the US Jeep, the Kubelwagen was a two-wheel drive vehicle but its high ground clearence and low gearing yielded excellent off-road performance and enabled it to keep pace with marching soldiers.
