KV-1 Heavy Tank Diecast Model

In 1938 the Soviets began work on a heavy tank replacement for the T-35. All but one tank design submitted for consideration were multi-turreted. The single-turret tank was called the KV-1, named after the defense commissar of the time Klimenti Voroshilov. The design was field tested during the winter war with Finland in 1940 and found to be very mobile compared to the other Soviet designs that had been proposed. The production version of the KV-1 was outfitted with a longer barrel 7.62 mm gun versus the short barreled prototype. At first the KV-1 was plagued with clutch and transmission problems but this was overcome when the Soviets realized that this was a great tank otherwise. The KV-1 went through many changes and improvements over the period of the war such as added armor for the KV-1B. When the Germans invaded Russia the KV-1 factory was packed up and moved deeper in Mother Russia to Cheljabinsk. Even with the move they Soviets were able to produce 933 KV-1s in the last half of 1941. The Germans weren't long re-marking any serviceable KV-1s they found and using them against the same people that manufactured them. The Russians claimed the KV-1 was capable of 35 km/h but they used the KV-1s as breakthrough tanks and this speed was seldom ever tested in this role. The KV-1s would do the heavy battling with the Germans and punch holes in their lines that would allow the fast T-34s to race through.

KV-1 Heavy Tank

Designed to replace the disappointing multi-turreted T-35 heavy tank, the Soviet KV was in service from 1939 to 1945. The primary goal of the KV's designers was to build a tank with impenetrable armor, and they succeeded-any tank in service at the time of the KV's introduction would have had to attack at point blank range in order to breach its hull. It also had good firepower and traction, but was unfortunately slow and difficult to steer. By 1942, with the introduction of 50 and 75 mm guns and the high-velocity MK 10, the KV had lost its armor advantage, though it remained in service through the end of the war.

Hobby Master's 1:72 scale KV heavy tank is constructed using an intelligent mix of diecast metal and plastic, which provides for a heavy feel with maximum scale replication. The top portion of the hull is made from plastic and the bottom from diecast metal. Fine details include rivets and bolts, separately-applied equipment such as boxes and tow cables, a 360 degree rotating turret, road wheels and torsion bar suspension. The series includes the KV1 variant—featuring a diecast metal turret with separately applied plastic side armor plates—and the KV2, featuring an unusually tall turret constructed from diecast metal with a pivoting metal cannon.
