In July 1960 Panzer Tank Battalion 24 / Regiment 6 was formed at Dedelstorf and equipped with the M48A2 Patton medium tank that were immediately put into service as soon as they arrived from the U.S. Army. Any updates and/or modifications were carried out in the field. In 1962 they relocated to Braunschweig (Brunswick) (Roselies / Henry the Lion Barracks). In 1966 the new Leopard 1 MBT started to arrive by the Leopard II in 1981. The Panzer Tank Battalion 24 was decommissioned in December 2003.
