On December 23, 1944 one of the 155 Douglas aircraft built in Chicago was delivered to the USAAF as C-54B-1-DC, c/n 10485, line # 216. The military serial was 42-72380 until 1946 when it was sold to American Airlines and registered as NC90417 and named "Flagship Monterey". In 1949 the aircraft was sold to Iberia and for 15 years was registered as EC-AEP. In 1963 it was leased to Iberia's subsidiary Aviaco. In 1964 EC-AEP was converted to the 16th ATL.98 Carvair and re-registered as EC-AXI on May 19, 1964. On February 1, 1969 it was leased to Dominicana who later bought it in May 1969 and registered it as HI-168 "President Malon". It remained with Dominicana until June 23, 1969.
Designed to meet a United Airlines requirement for a long-range passenger airliner, the Douglas DC-4 was first flown on June 7, 1938. The prototype was a very ambitious four-engined, pressurized aircraft that was three times the size of its predecessor, the DC-3-a design that proved far too expensive and difficult for civilian airlines to maintain. Douglas revised the design, but by the time it was complete WWII was well underway and development of the aircraft was channeled to the US military. Post-war, the DC-4 became a popular and reliable airliner with major carriers such as National and Northwest Airlines. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
