The Air Transport Command was the World War II-era United States Army Air Forces unit focused on transportation of troops and supplies. It was composed almost entirely of cargo planes, and was the precursor to what became the United States Air Force Military Air Transport Service, then Military Airlift Command and eventually the Air Mobility Command. Like the C-47 Skytrain, the C-54 Skymaster was derived from a civilian airliner (the Douglas DC-4). C-54s began service with the US Army Air Forces in 1942, carrying up to 26 passengers. (Later versions carried up to 50 passengers.) The U.S. Navy also acquired the type, under the designation R5D. The C-54 was one of the most commonly used long-range transports by the U.S. armed forces in World War II. 515 C-54s were manufactured in Santa Monica, CA and 655 were manufactured in Chicago, Illinois.

Douglas C-54 Skymaster

Designed as a military derivative of the Douglas DC-4 civilian airliner, the Douglas C-54 Skymaster was introduced in 1942. Used by the US Army Air Forces and the US Navy, the Skymaster was the most prolific US long-range transport aircraft to serve during WWII, and the first four-engined transport to serve with the USAAF. It is best known, however, as the first official Air Force One presidential transport aircraft. Called “Sacred Cow,” the Skymaster received this designation in 1944 when it was modified for use by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt used the aircraft just one time, though it remained in service for more than two years.
