The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (roughly "flying swallow") was a Japanese World War II fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The Allied code name assigned by the United States War Department was "Tony". The Japanese Army designation was "Army Type 3 Fighter". It was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of the war to use a liquid-cooled inline "V" engine.
Designed in response to an Imperial Army tender for a general-purpose, air superiority fighter, the Kawasaki Ki-61 first flew in December of 1941. This new fighter entered combat in New Guinea during the spring of 1943, where its unusual appearance earned it the code name "Tony" (Allieds mistakenly identified its origins as Italian). The new aircraft quickly earned the respect of Allied pilots, whose P-40 Warhawks were unable to dive to safety as they could when facing earlier Japanese fighters. The Marushin range presents detailed, pre-painted diecast aircraft kits of military aircraft in 1:48 scale. The models do require some basic assembly using a screwdriver and some glue. Most of the components are designed to "press-fit" together, but the application of a small amount of superglue during assembly results in a much more robust finished model. Each model includes an illustrated step-by-step instruction sheet with Japanese text. Although no English translation is available, the illustrations are quite simple to follow.
