On April 18, 1942, 16 B-25 bombers took off from the USS HORNET, the first fully-loaded bombers ever to take off from an aircraft carrier. The raid was the United States' answer to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor four months earlier. The Raiders, Jimmy Doolittle's 80 volunteers, flew the B-25 Mitchell bombers on an air strike against Tokyo, and became the stuff of legends.

The Yorktown class was a class of three aircraft carriers build shortly before World War II and commissioned into the US Navy between 1937 and 1941. They immediately followed Ranger, the first U.S. aircraft carrier built as such, and benefited in design from experience with Ranger and the earlier Lexington class, which were conversions into carriers of two battlecruisers.
