The B-52 is a 488,000 lb. six seat long range bomber equipped with cannons, ALCMs, and nuclear free fall bombs. With a max speed of 600 m.p.h. and a range of 10,000 miles this ever changing 1960's bomber cost more than $20 million dollars each. Designed to replace the piston-engined B-50, the B-52 Stratofortress was first operated by the United States Air Force on April 15th, 1952 and is expected to fly until at least 2040. This massive aircraft served during the Cold War as a nuclear deterrent, on bomber and reconnaissance missions in Vietnam, as a carpet-bomber in the Persian Gulf War and in Afghanistan and Iraq. The B-52 has a 185-foot wingspan, eight turbofan engines positioned in pairs, a length of more than 160 feet and a gross weight of more than 480,000 pounds, characteristics that earned it the nickname BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fellow).© Copyright 2003-2009 The Flying Mule, Inc.
