Although only 45 were ever used by the United States during World War II, the P-80 Shooting Star's production total would eventually near 2,000 aircrafts by the end of the Korean War. Clocked at 594 mph (one of the fastest aircrafts in its day) and armed with six 12.7 mm machine guns, two 454 kg bombs and eight rockets, many of the single-seat fighter bombers ended their days as unmanned target drones. The P-80 was the first jet fighter produced by Lockheed.
Designed around the blueprint dimensions of the de Havilland H-1 B turbojet, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star was first flown on January 8, 1944. The P-80's design team developed the airframe to accept the British engine, even though they did not have access to one. The P-80 was the US Army Air Forces' first operational jet fighter, and the world's first operational jet fighter to have a single engine integrated with the fuselage.
