In late 1985, the US Air Force introduced the B-1B Lancer to serve as a long-range multi-role strategic bomber with a radar cross-section one-quarter that of the B-52. It reached a maximum speed of Mach 1.25 and had the ability to take-off at a maximum weight of 477,000 pounds. The Lancer maintains three internal weapons bays that could be used for conventional bombs, cruise missiles, short-range attack missiles and nuclear bombs. "American Flyer" belonged to the 28th Bomber Wing (Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota).
Designed as a replacement for the B-52 Stratofortress, the B-1 Lancer was first flown on December 23, 1974 but did not enter service until 1986. First envisioned in the 1960s, this aircraft took two decades to begin its career. Its development was halted and restarted numerous times, and it was alternately praised for its potential and decried as gross misuse of taxpayer money. Today, the B-1 operates as a long-range, supersonic low-level penetrator.
