In late 1985, the US Air Force introduced the B-1B Lancer to serve as a long-range multi-role strategic bomber with a radar cross-section one-quarter that of the B-52. It reached a maximum speed of Mach 1.25 and had the ability to take-off at a maximum weight of 477,000 pounds. The Lancer maintains three internal weapons bays that could be used for conventional bombs, cruise missiles, short-range attack missiles and nuclear bombs. "American Flyer" belonged to the 28th Bomber Wing (Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota).
