The Junkers Ju 88 was a four-seat bomber/dive-bomber. Clearly the most versatile German warplane of the World War II era, the Ju 88s production total reached nearly 15,000 aircraft. It was almost as fast as the fighters of the era, and combined with its superior maneuverability (as a bomber), the Ju 88 proved essential to Luftwaffe operations. The aircraft was equipped with one forward-firing 13 mm MG 131 or two 7.92 mm MG 81 machine-guns, two similar guns in the rear of the cockpit firing aft and two below the fuselage firing aft. The Ju 88 could carry up to 4,409 pounds of bombs
The Ju 88 became successful as a bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and heavy fighter. Like its British contemporary, the de Havilland Mosquito, a twin-engine configuration was a key to its versatility. Advancements in later versions included strengthened wings, dive brakes, an extended fuselage and a crew compartment that was fitted to the extreme forward portion of the thin fuselage, with glazed glasswork and accommodations for three to four personnel. With its BMW radial and Jumo 213 engines, the last versions of the Ju 88 were almost as fast as contemporary fighters and easily handled the violent aerobatics performed during combat.© Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
