The Tornado is Europe's largest military aircraft programme and is employed by all airforces. In addition, it is also one of the most imortant combat aircraft in the service of NATO. On account of its modern electronic equipment and excellent aerodynamical characteristics, it forms the backbone of the European air defence. The task spectrum of the fighter bomber covers offensive air support of the land forces, cordoning off the combat zone and engagement of enemy airforces on the ground adn in the air. Moreover, it can boast electronic flight control and an automatic terrain following flight system. The Tornado is a "vairable geometry" or "swing wing" aircraft, making it capable of high-speed low-altitude flying as well as slow-speed flying with minimum wing sweep.

Panavia Tornado GR.Mk 1

Designed in collaboration with Britain, West Germany and Italy, the Tornado was first flown on August 14th, 1974 and is thought by many to be the most important military aircraft in Western European history. Nicknamed "The Flying Fin" because of its large tail fin, the Tornado has a variable wing sweep design and is capable of taking off and landing on short airstrips. It is equipped with terrain-following radar, which allows for hands-off, low-level flight in any weather. There are three primary versions: an electronic combat/reconnaissance version, an interceptor and a highly versatile strike fighter-bomber capable of carrying almost all of NATO's air-launched weapons.
