Curtiss R5C-1 Commando, tail number LH14, flew for United States Marine Corps squadron VMR-252 (Marine Transport Squadron 252), the military designation for the C-46 Commando used by the Navy and Marine Corps; individual manufacturer serial numbers for wartime military C-46 airframes of this type are not consistently documented in public sources. VMR-252, based at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California, in the postwar years, used the R5C-1 for personnel and cargo transport supporting Marine aviation logistics. The squadron's history traces back to 1928 and included service through major World War II Pacific campaigns including Pearl Harbor, the Marianas, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, later continuing its transport mission through the Korean War era as military airlift needs evolved alongside jet-age aircraft development.
