Airbus A319-111, manufacturer serial number 1654, was registered as EP-IEP with Iran Air, the Iranian flag carrier, following a well-traveled path through registrations including 9H-LCB, B-2225, EI-ETN, EY-559, and EP-THF before settling with Iran Air. This circuitous registration history reflects the complex secondhand leasing arrangements often required to bring Western-built aircraft into Iran's fleet amid decades of international sanctions restricting the country's direct access to new Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies, supporting Iran Air's domestic network under these constrained conditions. The brief 2015-2018 window following the Iran nuclear deal saw Iran Air place large orders directly with Airbus and Boeing, though most of those aircraft were never delivered after the United States withdrew from the agreement, leaving Iran Air reliant on aging, secondhand, and sanctioned-workaround aircraft like EP-IEP.
