McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, was registered as F-BTDD with Aerolyon, the French long-haul carrier based in Lyon, having been leased from ChallengAir in 1996 to help launch the airline's operations. Aerolyon operated a maximum of three DC-10s connecting Lyon and Paris to Caribbean and West Indies destinations before the carrier's May 2002 cessation of operations and subsequent bankruptcy that August. Aerolyon had been owned first by French tour operator Nouvelles Frontieres and later by TUI AG following that company's 2000 acquisition of Nouvelles Frontieres, though TUI ultimately redirected its French long-haul ambitions toward Corsairfly rather than continuing to invest in the smaller Lyon-based operation.
