McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, was registered as F-BPVD with Air Liberte, the French independent carrier. Air Liberte built a substantial widebody fleet during the 1990s supporting long-haul international and charter routes from France before merging with AOM French Airlines and Air Littoral, with the combined entity later absorbed into Swissair's holding structure ahead of Swissair's own 2001 collapse. The tangled corporate history that followed Swissair's implosion left Air Liberte in serious financial distress, and the carrier underwent successive rounds of restructuring and ownership changes before finally ceasing operations in 2003, a fate shared by several French independent airlines caught up in the broader European aviation shakeout of that era.
