McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, was registered as F-GKMY with AOM French Airlines, the independent French carrier formed in 1990 through the merger of several French charter operators. AOM supported long-haul international routes connecting France to destinations across Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia before later merging with Air Liberte and Air Littoral in the late 1990s. AOM's formation reflected a broader consolidation trend among France's fragmented independent airline sector during the early 1990s, as smaller charter and scheduled operators sought the scale needed to compete against both Air France's dominant position and the growing threat of low-cost entrants into the French domestic and European short-haul markets.
