Lockheed L-188 Electra, was registered as N6016A with Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), the beloved California carrier, though the manufacturer serial number for this specific airframe is not confirmed in available public records. Introduced in late 1959 to replace PSA's DC-4s and dramatically increase capacity on the airline's popular Los Angeles-San Francisco route, N6016A was part of the "Smileliner" fleet, nicknamed for PSA's distinctive painted smile on each aircraft's nose, that helped the carrier become California's dominant intrastate airline before deregulation. PSA's California-only route structure exempted it from federal Civil Aeronautics Board fare regulation, allowing the airline to pioneer the low-fare, high-frequency operating model that later inspired Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher when he built his own carrier in Texas.

Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production.
