Lockheed L-188 Electra, was registered as N171PS with Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), the beloved California carrier, though the manufacturer serial number for this specific airframe is not confirmed in available public records. Introduced in late 1959 to replace PSA's DC-4s and dramatically increase capacity on the airline's popular Los Angeles-San Francisco route, N171PS was part of the "Smileliner" fleet, nicknamed for PSA's distinctive painted smile on each aircraft's nose, that helped the carrier become California's dominant intrastate airline before deregulation. PSA passenger numbers grew from 355,000 in 1959 to over five million by 1970, a trajectory the Electra fleet made possible, and the airline's cheerful branding and famously friendly flight attendants became such a fixture of California culture that PSA was often called the state's unofficial airline.

Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production.
