McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32F, first flew April 5, 1968, and was delivered to Alitalia on May 9, 1968, as I-DIKG named "Anteo," before later joining Overseas National Airways as N938F (nicknamed "Gina") in February 1972, and finally converting to freighter configuration as N940F with Evergreen International Airlines upon delivery in October 1976. Evergreen, the Oregon-based cargo and charter operator founded by Delford Smith, built a diverse aviation business spanning helicopter services, agricultural aviation, and dedicated freighter operations, with N940F supporting Evergreen's cargo network for the airline before the parent company's eventual 2013 bankruptcy and closure amid mounting debts.

Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals.
