McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, was registered as OY-KGW with SAS Scandinavian Airlines as part of the carrier's substantial DC-9 fleet, which SAS operated continuously from the type's introduction in 1968 until finally retiring its last McDonnell Douglas-built aircraft, an MD-82, in October 2013. Over that 45-year relationship, SAS's combined DC-9 and MD-80 fleet flew more than 3.1 million flights and nearly three billion kilometers, making Douglas and McDonnell Douglas narrowbodies one of the most enduring aircraft families in the airline's history, with OY-KGW supporting SAS's dense Scandinavian domestic and short-haul European network for years during this long partnership.
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
