Airbus A320, was registered as TS-INA with Iran Air, though the Tunisian-style "TS-" registration prefix combined with Iran Air's operation is unusual and may reflect a lease arrangement between the two countries' aviation sectors. Iran Air has maintained a mixed Airbus narrowbody fleet despite ongoing international sanctions significantly restricting the carrier's ability to acquire new aircraft and spare parts directly from Airbus, often requiring creative leasing and registration arrangements involving third-country intermediaries to keep its aging fleet operational and compliant with the complex web of international trade restrictions affecting Iranian civil aviation.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
