Boeing 767-27GB(ER), registered V8-MHB, flew for Royal Brunei Airlines, the small Southeast Asian sultanate's wholly government-owned flag carrier, as part of the airline's long-haul widebody fleet supporting international routes connecting Bandar Seri Begawan to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Royal Brunei's compact but ambitious international network reflected the oil-rich sultanate's desire to maintain independent long-haul connectivity despite its small population, a strategy the carrier has continued with its more recent 787 Dreamliner fleet supporting routes to London, Dubai, and other distant destinations from its small home base.

Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
