Airbus A320-231, registered VT-EPL, flies for Air India as part of the flag carrier's fleet of A320s supporting domestic Indian routes and short-haul regional connections. Air India's narrowbody fleet has historically complemented the carrier's long-haul widebody operations connecting India to international destinations, and the airline's A320 family aircraft form the backbone of its domestic network connecting major Indian metropolitan areas, a role that has continued through the carrier's 2022 privatization and subsequent acquisition by the Tata Group, which has pursued substantial fleet renewal and modernization plans for Air India's domestic and international operations.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
