Boeing 767-222, registered N602UA, was one of United Airlines' original 767-200s, among the launch aircraft for the type when United became the first airline to operate the Boeing 767 in September 1982. Alongside sister aircraft N601UA, N602UA supported United's pioneering introduction of twin-engine widebody technology to the carrier's medium-haul domestic and international network, a role that established the 767 as a mainstay of United's fleet for decades and cemented the airline's place in aviation history as the type's launch customer.

Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
