Sud Aviation Caravelle, registered 7T-VAK, flew for Air Algerie, Algeria's flag carrier, as part of the airline's early fleet of French-built jets supporting domestic Algerian and regional Mediterranean routes from Algiers during the 1960s and 1970s. The Caravelle, the first jet airliner designed specifically for short and medium-haul routes, proved popular among European and North African carriers including Air Algerie, which used the type to modernize its network following Algeria's 1962 independence from France.
