Airbus A310-203, registered 5B-DAX, flew for Cyprus Airways, the Mediterranean island nation's flag carrier, as part of the airline's long-haul widebody fleet supporting international routes connecting Larnaca to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Cyprus Airways served as the country's primary international air link for decades, and the carrier's A310 fleet represented an important modernization step during the 1980s and 1990s before Cyprus Airways' eventual 2015 collapse amid mounting debts and European Union state-aid rulings.
