Douglas DC-9-32, construction number 47148, was delivered to Swissair as HB-IFV in 1967 during the airline's expansion of its short and medium haul jet fleet. The aircraft operated services across Europe from Zurich and Geneva, linking major business and leisure destinations with reliable jet service. HB-IFV featured a two class cabin and wore Swissair's classic red and white livery, reflecting the carrier's strong brand identity. The DC-9-32 provided excellent performance from shorter runways and high altitude airports, making it well suited to Swissair's network. After years of dependable service, HB-IFV was retired as Swissair transitioned to newer aircraft types, closing an important chapter in the airline's European jet operations.

Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
