Vickers Viscount 837, construction number 420, was delivered to Austrian Airlines as OE-LAM in the early 1960s as part of the carrier's transition to modern turboprop operations. The aircraft operated short and medium haul routes across Central and Western Europe from Vienna, offering improved speed, comfort, and reliability compared with piston engined airliners. OE-LAM featured a pressurized cabin and large windows, enhancing the passenger experience, and wore Austrian Airlines' classic red and white livery. The Viscount 800 series became a backbone of the airline's regional network during a period of rapid growth. OE-LAM served for several years before being retired and replaced by newer turboprop and jet aircraft, marking the end of an important era in Austrian Airlines' early fleet history.

Designed as a medium-range pressurized turboprop aircraft, the Vickers Viscount first flew on July 16, 1948. As the world's first turboprop airliner, the Viscount filled a need for passenger transport on less popular routes. The early 630 design could carry 32 passengers, but it was ultimately rejected because of high per-passenger costs that made it impractical for commercial purposes. The redesigned 700 could carry up to 48 passengers, and the later Type 800 "Super Viscount" added an extra 23 passengers for a total of 71.
