Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle VI-R, serial number 232, entered service with VARIG as PP-VJC. The aircraft joined Brazil's flag carrier during the expansion of jet travel across South America. Operating domestic and regional international routes, the Caravelle provided passengers with a quiet and comfortable jet experience thanks to its rear mounted Rolls-Royce Avon engines. PP-VJC helped modernize VARIG's regional network during the 1960s and early 1970s.
