Airbus A320-214, registered OO-SNJ, flies for Brussels Airlines as part of the Belgian carrier's fleet of A320s supporting short-haul European routes from Brussels. Brussels Airlines emerged from the ashes of Sabena's dramatic November 2001 bankruptcy and collapse, inheriting much of Sabena's European route network and eventually becoming a Lufthansa Group subsidiary, with its A320 fleet continuing to serve the dense European short-haul market that Sabena had built over its own eight-decade history.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
