McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10, registered N68056, was originally delivered to Continental Airlines in March 1975 before joining Federal Express in October 1986 and later being converted to MD-10 configuration in June 1994, an upgrade that eliminated the need for a flight engineer through a modernized glass cockpit. As part of FedEx's substantial MD-10/DC-10 freighter fleet, N68056 supported the company's overnight express delivery network from its Memphis superhub for over three decades before the type's eventual retirement.
