Boeing 707-437, serial number 17723, entered service with Air India as VT-DJI. The aircraft joined Air India's pioneering jet fleet and operated long haul international routes from India to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and other destinations. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Conway turbofan engines, the 707-420 series was particularly suited to the airline's demanding long distance operations. VT-DJI helped transform Air India's international services during the 1960s, providing substantially greater speed and passenger comfort while reinforcing the airline's distinctive presence on major intercontinental routes.
