Airbus A320-214, registered C-GCKU, flies for Air Transat, the Canadian leisure carrier, as part of the airline's fleet of A320s supporting shorter-haul charter routes to Caribbean and other North American vacation destinations. Air Transat, historically known for its widebody fleet on transatlantic and long-haul leisure routes, incorporated narrowbody A320s to serve shorter regional charter and scheduled leisure markets, complementing the carrier's core long-haul European operations from its Montreal base.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
