Boeing 767-233, registered C-FBEG, was one of Air Canada's original 767-200s, among the earliest customers for the type when Boeing introduced the 767 in the early 1980s. Air Canada's 767 fleet transformed the carrier's medium and long-haul capability, replacing older aircraft on routes connecting Canada to Europe and the Caribbean, cementing the type's role as a mainstay of the airline's widebody operations for over two decades before later fleet expansion with 777 and 787 aircraft.

Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
